The Phoenix Symphony demonstrated its commitment to music education and community engagement through outreach events that took place on March 18th and 19th. During these events, musical ensembles from the symphony visited nine school campuses across the Valley. One particular visit by the brass ensemble to Casa Blanca Community School in Bapchule was notably special.
At Casa Blanca Community School, students and staff showed enthusiasm in welcoming the brass musicians. The students were involved in directing the ensemble’s dynamics, exploring nonverbal communication in performances, and examining the design of uncoiled brass instruments.
This visit coincided with the celebration by the Gila River Indian Community of Russell “Big Chief” Moore’s legacy. Moore was a renowned jazz trombonist and Pima tribe member born in 1912 in Gila Crossing, Arizona. His notable performances included playing with Frank Sinatra and as part of Louis Armstrong’s band.
The experience was further enriched by the brass musicians learning some common phrases in the Akimel O’odham language from the student council, fostering a cultural exchange between the students and musicians.
These outreach events highlight music as a universal language that connects cultures and people. "The Phoenix Symphony is immensely grateful to the Gila River Indian Community for this enriching opportunity, and we cherish the memories created at each school we have the opportunity to visit including Casa Blanca Community School."
These interactions are part of the symphony’s efforts to learn, grow, and celebrate the diverse tapestry of talent in Arizona.
