Phoenix Art Museum is set to host the 2025 Eric Fischl Series in collaboration with Phoenix College. The event will feature renowned artist and Phoenix College alumnus Eric Fischl. It will include a student art exhibition, the Vanguard Awards presentation, and a discussion between Fischl and Eleanor Nairne, the Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Curator for Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Modern Art.
The series is scheduled for April 2, 2025, from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. Tickets are priced at $5 for the public but are free for museum members and Maricopa County Community College students with an active ID.
Jeremy Mikolajczak, Sybil Harrington Director and CEO of Phoenix Art Museum, expressed excitement about this year's event. "As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the program, Phoenix Art Museum, in partnership with Phoenix College, is thrilled to turn the spotlight on the namesake artist for this year’s Eric Fischl Lecture," he said.
Fischl's new works include "Bathers," a series of large-scale bronze sculptures derived from virtual reality paintings. The event will also mark the premiere of a new exhibition focusing on Fischl's work later this year.
Eric Fischl was born in New York City in 1948 and grew up in Long Island's suburbs. He began his art education at Phoenix College before earning his B.F.A. from California Institute for the Arts in 1972. His early work explored themes related to suburban life and its complexities.
Eleanor Nairne has curated several critically acclaimed exhibitions during her career, including shows at Barbican Art Gallery in London and Acquavella Galleries in New York. She holds an MA in History of Art from Courtauld Institute of Art and a BA in Modern History from Oxford University.
The evening will begin with an exhibition by Phoenix College students at Cummings Great Hall South. The Vanguard Awards will be presented to students whose works are selected as "Best in Show." Since its inception by Fischl in 2005, more than 67 students have received this award.
Tickets for Maricopa County Community Colleges District (MCCCD) students are free through a program that also grants them access to PhxArt exhibitions throughout the year.
