The Phoenix Symphony recently demonstrated its dedication to music education and community engagement through a series of school visits on March 18th and 19th. Nine campuses across the Valley welcomed musician ensembles, with a standout visit occurring at Casa Blanca Community School in Bapchule.
At Casa Blanca, the brass ensemble was met with enthusiasm from students and staff. Students participated actively by directing the dynamics of the ensemble, exploring nonverbal communication in musical performance, and examining brass instruments' design in their uncoiled form.
This visit held particular significance as it aligned with the Gila River Indian Community's celebration of Russell "Big Chief" Moore's legacy. Moore, born in 1912 in Gila Crossing, Arizona, was a prominent American jazz trombonist and member of the Pima tribe. He performed with notable musicians such as Frank Sinatra, Lionel Hampton, Alberta Hunter, Pee Wee Russell, and Louis Armstrong.
During the visit, brass musicians also learned some Akimel O’odham phrases from the student council. Simple exchanges like “Hi, my name is…” and “Thank you for letting us visit” facilitated meaningful interactions between students and musicians.
These outreach efforts highlight music as a universal language that bridges cultures. The Phoenix Symphony expressed gratitude to the Gila River Indian Community for this enriching experience at Casa Blanca Community School.
Through these engagements, The Phoenix Symphony continues to learn from and celebrate Arizona's diverse talent.
