The Phoenix Art Museum is set to showcase a new exhibition, "Richard Avedon: Among Creatives," starting December 6, 2024. This exhibition will run until May 25, 2025, and features over 50 photographs by Richard Avedon, a prominent photographer known for his large-scale portraits and fashion photography.

Jeremy Mikolajczak, the Sybil Harrington Director and CEO of Phoenix Art Museum, expressed enthusiasm about the exhibit: “We are excited to share this intimate perspective of Richard Avedon’s work with our audiences.” He noted that Avedon's work in various fields has made him a familiar name and highlighted the exhibition's exploration of the intricate relationships among artists.

Avedon began his career as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar magazine. Over time, he expanded his focus to include influential figures from various creative fields. His work often explored the contrast between public personas and private lives.

The exhibition includes notable portraits such as Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, Paul McCartney, and others. Emilia Mickevicius, the Norton Family Assistant Curator of Photography at Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography, commented on the exhibition: “By pairing Avedon’s fashion work with his portraits of fellow creative people, Among Creatives explores how a leading artist of his generation portrayed the concept, meaning, and perception of artistry.”

"Richard Avedon: Among Creatives" is co-organized by Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography. It draws from "Richard Avedon: Relationships," previously shown in Milan and Rotterdam. The presentation at Phoenix is curated by Emilia Mickevicius.

Admission to this exhibition is free for museum members; youth aged five and younger; and Maricopa County Community Colleges students. The general public can access it with regular admission fees or during voluntary-donation times on Wednesdays from 3 – 8 pm.

Phoenix Art Museum has been a cultural hub since its opening in 1959. It offers exhibitions across diverse art forms alongside performances and educational programs. More information about visiting can be found on their website.

The Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona is renowned for its extensive collections in photography history. Established in 1975 with Ansel Adams' involvement, it houses significant archives from many master photographers.
