The Phoenix Mercury has signed guard Sug Sutton to a training camp contract, the team announced. Sutton participated in all 40 games last season, starting in 12 of them for the Mercury. She averaged 8.2 points, a team-leading 4.8 assists—ranking ninth in the WNBA—and 2.6 rebounds per game.
Notably, Sutton achieved the first triple-double in the history of the Mercury with 18 points, 11 assists, and 11 rebounds against the Las Vegas Aces on September 8. She is one of only two players, alongside Sabrina Ionescu, to record a triple-double within their first two seasons and is unique as a player drafted after the first round to achieve this feat.
Sutton's performance last season included scoring in double figures on 15 occasions, with two games exceeding 20 points. Initially selected by the Washington Mystics as the 36th overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, she played her rookie season appearing in 12 games.
Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, Sutton played college basketball at the University of Texas from 2016 to 2020. During her time there, she earned All-Big 12 Team honors twice and was a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award during her junior and senior years.
The Phoenix Mercury will commence their upcoming WNBA season away against the Las Vegas Aces on May 14 and will host their home opener against the Atlanta Dream on May 18. Tickets for this event are available through phoenixmercury.com/single-game-tickets.
