The Arizona Cardinals' General Manager, Monti Ossenfort, remains committed to a continuous roster-building approach as the NFL draft approaches. With the early phases of free agency behind them, some of the team's own free agents, including linebacker Kyzir White and guard Will Hernandez, still remain unsigned.
During the NFL owners meetings at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Ossenfort commented on the team's flexible approach. "We haven't closed the door on anybody," he stated. Despite ongoing efforts, the Cardinals have made significant roster upgrades, including the additions of defensive players Josh Sweat and Dalvin Tomlinson, as well as veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett. This leaves Ossenfort feeling positive about their upcoming draft options. "There isn't one spot where we are like, we have to have that at 16 because we have to have someone immediately go in there," he said.
Sweat's inclusion to the team is seen as a natural fit beyond his connections to other Cardinals personnel. Meanwhile, Tomlinson's addition came after he was released during free agency week amid reports that the team had also shown interest in defensive tackle Milton Williams.
Ossenfort highlighted the necessity of maintaining flexibility during free agency since signing targeted players is often competitive. "There were a number of players we wanted to go in and sign, and 31 other teams can go after those players too," he explained. However, the Cardinals were able to acquire Tomlinson, a move Ossenfort seems satisfied with. "I've been a long-time admirer of Dalvin and his game. When he came available it was a great fit," he remarked.
As the draft preparation becomes the focus, the team holds significant cap room, about $40 million. Ossenfort noted this could be used strategically. "It gives you opportunity and provides flexibility," he mentioned, explaining that fiscal prudence is vital to ensuring not only current year benefits but also future team planning. "You've got to make the right decisions, because if you don't, it doesn't just hamper this year but it can do it for subsequent teams as well."
Overall, the Cardinals appear to be in a strong position as they approach the draft, faced with decisions but holding potential pathways open.
