Dr. Samuel Galvagno appointed as anesthesiology chair at UA College of Medicine – Phoenix

Samuel M. Galvagno, DO, PhD, MS, MBA, FCCM, has been appointed chairman and tenured professor of anesthesiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix and Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix. The announcement was made on Monday.

Dr. Galvagno is a practicing anesthesiologist with a specialization in critical care medicine. Recognized as an expert in aeromedical critical care and patient safety, he has authored over 200 publications. His research work is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Currently, Dr. Galvagno is a tenured professor and interim chair of anesthesiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Additionally, he serves as a colonel in the U.S. Air Force, working as the mobilization assistant to the commander for the 711th Human Performance Wing at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. He received his commissioning through the health professions scholarship program while at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. His training includes an internship at St. Clare’s/St. Vincent’s Midtown Hospital in New York City, residency at Harvard Medical School, and fellowships in critical care medicine and research at Johns Hopkins University, where he completed his doctorate.

His national roles include serving as chair-elect of the Society of Critical Care Medicine's anesthesiology section, chair of the American Board of Anesthesiology critical care exam committee, and chair of the ABPN neurocritical care exam committee. In 2016, he was elected a fellow of the Academy of Critical Care Medicine and holds board certifications in several related fields.

His leadership and experience will be invaluable as we continue to grow our destination clinical programs, launch our anesthesia residency to train the next generation and conduct clinical research to advance the practice of medicine.”

Dr. Galvagno is scheduled to begin his new role on July 14.
