In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Banner Health has introduced its "Somos Banner Health" series, which this year aims to raise awareness about health issues impacting the Hispanic community. One of the focal points is cancer, identified as the leading cause of death among Hispanics.

The American Cancer Society reports that cancer accounts for 20% of all deaths within the Hispanic community. This highlights the critical need for heightened awareness and preventive measures to combat this disease in this population.

Common types of cancer affecting Hispanic individuals include lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers. Understanding the risk factors associated with these cancers and adopting preventive measures is essential for reducing risks.

Dr. Christina Gomez, an oncologist at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, stressed the significance of early detection in improving cancer outcomes.

"Regular screenings for lung, colorectal, breast and prostate cancers play a crucial role in detecting abnormalities early when treatment is most effective,” Dr. Gomez said. “By prioritizing preventive care and seeking timely screenings, we can save lives and improve health outcomes within the Hispanic community."

Some recommended tips to prevent cancer are:

- Prioritize a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular physical activity

- Avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption

- Protect yourself from ultraviolet rays by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and breathable fabrics

These lifestyle choices can significantly lower the risk of developing cancer and promote overall well-being.
