The Arizona Cardinals have retained defensive lineman L.J. Collier, who agreed to a one-year contract with the team. This marks his third consecutive one-year deal with the Cardinals. The decision comes amid the departure of other defensive linemen, Roy Lopez and Khyiris Tonga, who have signed with the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots respectively.
In addition to Collier's return, the Cardinals are reportedly set to sign former Washington Commanders linebacker Mykal Walker. Walker has recorded four career interceptions over 74 games and contributed significantly on special teams last season. The team faces potential losses in free agency with inside linebackers Kyzir White and Krys Barnes.
Collier achieved career highs last season, playing in 17 games and recording 3.5 sacks as part of Nick Rallis' defensive line rotation. His contributions included six quarterback hits, four tackles for loss, two pass deflections, and a fumble recovery. Collier provided veteran leadership following injuries to fellow veterans Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols.
Originally drafted in the first round by Seattle, Collier joined the Cardinals in 2023 but suffered a season-ending injury during his debut game with Arizona. He returned last year to play a key role on the defensive line.
Naquan Jones remains the sole free agent from last year's defensive line rotation yet to be re-signed by the Cardinals. Both Jones and Nichols are expected to resume their roles this season alongside Darius Robinson, a first-round pick from 2024 anticipated to make significant progress.
With an upcoming draft featuring a strong class of defensive linemen, the Cardinals are likely to further bolster their roster at that position.
