Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center at Banner Boswell Medical Center has introduced a new treatment option for liver cancer patients called Hepatic Arterial Infusion (HAI) therapy. This treatment uses a pump to deliver chemotherapy directly into liver tumors, offering hope to patients like Shannon Jacobo, who was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer after initially being treated for stage II.
Jacobo, 45, underwent surgery to remove part of her colon but later discovered cancerous spots in her liver. "Since [that stage IV diagnosis], I had to undergo regular chemotherapy that was starting to debilitate my body and my spirit," she said. She then turned to Dr. Rajesh Ramanathan at Banner MD Anderson for HAI therapy.
Dr. Ramanathan stated that their facility is the only one in the southwest offering this innovative treatment. "Because we’re delivering the chemotherapy directly into one’s cancerous cells, we can limit how much of the drug is reaching the healthy parts of one’s body," he explained.
Jacobo underwent the procedure on October 22, 2024, coinciding with her daughter's 18th birthday. She reports feeling stronger and anticipates potentially being cancer-free within six months. "Dr. Ramanathan was the light I needed," Jacobo expressed.
The HAI procedure is also available at Banner MD Anderson at Banner Gateway Medical Center. Dr. Ramanathan added, "HAI truly helps make our patients’ lives easier on their cancer journey."
