The Phoenix Mercury has signed guard Sami Whitcomb, a two-time WNBA Champion. Whitcomb, known for her shooting skills and experience, is expected to strengthen the team significantly.

“Sami is a savvy guard who can spread the floor with her shooting and does all the little things,” stated Nick U’Ren, general manager of the Mercury. “Her veteran and championship experience will be a big boost to our team.”

Whitcomb has been instrumental in leading the Seattle Storm to WNBA titles in 2018 and 2020. She ranks second in WNBA history for three-pointers made off the bench with 257 shots, following Kara Lawson's record of 306. Throughout her eight-year career in the league, she has averaged 6.9 points on 36.1% three-point shooting, along with 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists over 264 games (69 starts) playing for Seattle from 2017-20 and again from 2023-24, as well as New York during the years 2021-22.

In her most recent season with Seattle, Whitcomb participated in all 40 games, starting three times while averaging five points per game alongside other contributions such as rebounds and assists.

As an Australian citizen by naturalization, Whitcomb also represented Australia’s national basketball team—the Opals—winning a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics held last year (2024). Additionally noteworthy are her achievements including two FIBA World Cup medals: silver earned back in '18 followed up by another bronze attained just recently ('22), plus one more FIBA Asia Cup Bronze received earlier ('21).

The upcoming WNBA regular season begins May seventeenth when Phoenix hosts their Fry’s Food Stores Home Opener against none other than rival squad—the Seattle Storm—at seven o'clock sharp p.m., Saturday evening!
