For Women's History Month, the Mercury is highlighting the contributions of women who play vital roles behind the scenes in their organization. The team takes pride in having an all-women performance staff at the highest level of women's basketball.
"It's really an honor," one staff member shared about leading an all-women's team. "In the sports medicine field, it was always my career goal to be working in professional sports, and the fact that I'm able to do that in an all-women's league is even more special."
The presence of diversity and representation in women's sports is a significant source of motivation for those involved. "Just seeing other women that look like me and being around other athletes that look like me... I believe can be very educational for a woman," another team member explained.
Reflecting on her personal journey, a former professional basketball player emphasized the importance of role models: "I hope I am able to inspire and show women and young girls the ways you can have an impact in the sport you are passionate about even after playing."
The sense of community within the organization resonates deeply with its members. "Growing up in a household with that type of environment and now working in a similar environment... it's really unique to be surrounded by talented, creative, amazing and strong women," said one staff member.
The impact of female role models extends beyond individual aspirations. "Having young women and older women be able to see and visualize themselves in spaces they want to be in or doing something they want to do is super important," remarked another team member.
Joining an organization like the Mercury offers unique opportunities. "I joined the Mercury knowing I was coming into an environment where women were seen and mattered," shared one employee. The support system within the Mercury family is evident as well: "I grew up with all brothers, but here, I got all my sisters."
Reflecting on Women's History Month, one member highlighted the Mercury's longstanding role in advancing women's sports: "They'll continue to bust down the door and raise the floor."
The collaborative nature among women within the organization fosters creativity and innovation. "Incredible collaboration can take place when there's a willingness to share ideas and experiences," noted one staff member.
