The Arizona Cardinals are making strategic roster changes ahead of their game against the Carolina Panthers. With running back Emari Demercado on Injured Reserve and Trey Benson sidelined due to an ankle injury, the team has elevated veteran Michael Carter from the practice squad. This move aims to bolster their depth at running back as they face a Panthers defense known for its vulnerability against the run.
In addition to Carter, tackle Jackson Barton has also been promoted from the practice squad. This decision comes as Paris Johnson Jr. is out with a knee injury. Coach Jonathan Gannon expressed confidence in Carter's readiness and enthusiasm, stating, "(Carter) has been awesome. Loves to practice and loves to play. He's ready to go every day."
Carter joined the Cardinals in 2023 after being released by the Jets and quickly made an impact with 149 rushing yards on just 22 carries. However, his role was reduced following the drafting of Benson and Demercado's emergence as a third-down back.
Barton, who previously dealt with a foot injury while on practice squad IR, started in Week 3 against the Lions when both Jonah Williams and Kelvin Beachum were unavailable. With Beachum set to start at left tackle in place of Johnson, Barton's elevation marks his final allowable promotion from the practice squad this season without being added to the active roster.
