State Rep. Nancy Barto has launched a bid to return to the Senate with her Republican primary challenge against the recently elected Sen. Heather Carter.

The announcement by Barto, who was the senator for District 15 from 2011 until she was term-limited out of last year's election, provoked a strong response from the incumbent.

"It's disappointing my seatmate has decided to challenge a fellow Republican," Carter said in a statement. "Maybe she has unfinished business like protecting Big Tobacco, promoting her dangerous anti-vaxer views or however else she plans on threatening public health in Arizona."

Barto, who represents District 15 in the House of Representatives, argued her run for the Senate is "long overdue, which is why I'm starting this campaign in earnest now."

"Our freedoms and values are at risk in the Arizona Senate. This is why I felt compelled to run," Bart added in a Facebook post. "It is going to be a challenging race but if we stand together in this fight to defend our freedoms and values...it has been my honor to fight alongside you in defense of our fundamental freedoms."
