Tom Homan, recently appointed by President-elect Trump as the incoming administration's “border czar,” congratulated Arizona State Rep. Steve Montenegro as the new Speaker and State Sen. Janae Shamp as the Arizona Senate Majority Leader.
“Congratulations and much respect to America First Patriots State Rep. Steve Montenegro, the new Speaker, and State Sen. Janae Shamp, the new Arizona Senate Majority Leader for Arizona!” Homan posted on X.
Earlier this month, President-elect Trump announced Homan’s appointment as “border czar” in the incoming administration, tasking him with overseeing U.S. border security and deportation efforts.
Homan was appointed by Trump in January 2017 to be the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a position he held until June 29, 2018.
A native of West Carthage, NY, Homan began his career as a police officer in West Carthage before joining the Immigration and Naturalization Service in 1984, where he served as a Border Patrol agent, investigator, and supervisor. In 2013, under President Barack Obama, he was appointed as ICE’s executive associate director of enforcement and removal operations.
In the 2024 elections, Republicans increased their majority in the Arizona State Senate to 17 seats. The Democrats hold just 13 seats. Senate President Warren Petersen (R-Gilbert) will remain as the Senate President for his second consecutive term.
In the Arizona House, Republicans now hold 31 seats to the Democrats 29.
Montenegro was first elected to the Arizona House in 2008, representing District 12. He served until 2016, then served one term in the Arizona Senate for District 13 from 2017 to 2018. In 2022, Montenegro was elected again to the Arizona House, representing District 29.
A former operating room nurse, Shamp was first elected to represent Arizona’s 29th Legislative District in Nov. 2022. A resident of Surprise, she graduated cum laude from Arizona State University and received her nursing degree, also graduating cum laude, from Grand Canyon University.
