The Arizona Cardinals are focusing on an overarching skill set for their wide receivers, emphasizing versatility over sheer speed. Head coach Jonathan Gannon consistently emphasizes the fundamental role of the wide receiver: "Get open and catch the ball."
At the recent NFL owners meetings, General Manager Monti Ossenfort highlighted the need for speed, though he stressed its necessity within the broader context of the team's offensive strategy. "Speed always brings a different dynamic but overall it has to fit into the construct of the offense," Ossenfort stated. However, he mentioned that speed alone is insufficient, "It can't just be a one-trick pony."
Among the current roster, Xavier Weaver, Greg Dortch, and recently signed Quez Watkins are noted for their potential in fulfilling various roles, including deep threats. Despite the interest in speed, players like Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson are recognized for their blocking skills and other attributes pivotal to Gannon’s run-focused strategy.
Gannon remarked, "Receivers all look a little different," and emphasized the importance of varied roles on game day. Vertical threats are valuable, yet all receivers must be versatile, both mentally and physically.
Ossenfort pointed out diverse methods to enhance offensive explosiveness aside from speed, including run after the catch, and physical attributes like size and strength. He referred to Larry Fitzgerald's development in enhancing this aspect of his game and suggested Marvin Harrison Jr. could do likewise.
Drafting decisions remain pivotal as the Cardinals explore prospects to meet various requirements essential to their game philosophy. Gannon reiterated his primary expectation, "Get open and catch it. That's what I want those guys to do."
