Physician informaticist Alan Weiss, MD, MBA, FACP, will assume the role of senior vice president of clinical advancement at Banner Health on March 31. Dr. Weiss is tasked with enhancing care delivery through technology.

“At Banner Health, we embrace technology and are always looking for ways to innovate,” stated Dr. Marjorie Bessel, chief clinical officer at Banner. “We are thrilled that Dr. Weiss will join us to lead this work in the clinical environment. His talents and experience will greatly strengthen our efforts to bring technology to bear on safety, quality and clinician wellbeing.”

Dr. Weiss's responsibilities include collaborating with clinical, IT, and innovation partners across Banner’s six-state system to implement new technologies aimed at streamlining workflows and improving patient safety. He will also manage Banner’s telemedicine strategy to increase access to primary and specialty care while working on reducing administrative tasks that contribute to clinician burnout.

"Health care and technology are increasingly intertwined. With the expertise Dr. Weiss brings, we can take technology's value to the next level to benefit Banner's patients and clinical professionals alike," added Bessel.

Dr. Weiss has an extensive background as a physician informaticist with institutions such as Cleveland Clinic, Cedars-Sinai, Memorial Hermann, and BayCare Health System. He practiced internal medicine for a decade at Cleveland Clinic and held various leadership roles there before joining Banner Health.

He earned his medical degree and MBA from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. Among his accolades are the HIMSS Changemaker Award and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives Hero Award.

Banner Health operates as one of the largest secular nonprofit healthcare systems in the United States with facilities including 33 hospitals, an academic medicine division, outpatient centers, urgent care locations, pharmacies, imaging centers, physical therapy services, behavioral health services, a research division, and more across Arizona and five other states.
