Ashley Munoz, a 20-year-old college student from the University of Arizona, has transformed her experiences as a patient into a drive to become a pediatrician. Munoz has faced significant medical challenges since birth, including emergency surgeries and cancer treatments. Despite these hurdles, she volunteers at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa during breaks from her studies in biology and medical sciences.

Munoz's journey began with a high-risk pregnancy that led to her birth via emergency cesarean section in El Paso. Her early years were marked by health issues such as an emergency appendectomy at age three, seizures starting at eight, and a cancer diagnosis at nine that required chemotherapy and radiation.

At 15, Munoz discovered she had non-aggressive breast cancer. This experience further fueled her fear of doctors but also strengthened her resolve to pursue a career in medicine. Now volunteering at Banner Baywood's emergency department, she gains practical experience by assisting patients and shadowing medical professionals.

Munoz finds fulfillment in helping others navigate the hospital environment, saying, "It feels special to be able to help vulnerable people because I’ve gone through so much myself and can relate to that scary experience of being in a hospital." She views this opportunity as an essential step toward her goal of becoming a pediatrician.

Banner Baywood Medical Center is known for its comprehensive services including stroke care, orthopedics, and cancer treatment. It houses a 50,000 square-foot emergency department equipped with advanced technology. More information can be found on their website bannerhealth.com/baywood.
