Diana Taurasi, a legendary figure in women's basketball, has officially announced her retirement. Her departure marks the end of an era for the Phoenix Mercury and the sport as a whole.
"Diana is the greatest to have ever played the game," said Josh Bartelstein, Chief Executive Officer of Mercury and Suns. "She revolutionized the game with her scoring ability, infectious personality and the edge she brought to the court every night."
Nick U’Ren, General Manager of Mercury, praised Taurasi's dedication and work ethic. "Diana’s impact on our organization and league, the championships, and her countless accolades speak for themselves," he stated. "I have tremendous respect and admiration for her – as a fan, as a colleague and as a friend."
Jim Pitman, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Mercury and Suns, highlighted Taurasi's loyalty to one team throughout her career. "Playing an entire career with one team is rare," he noted. "Having a close-up seat to her greatness has been an incredible privilege."
Mercury President Vince Kozar reflected on Taurasi's influence beyond basketball. "Beyond the highlights and the accolades, Diana Taurasi is loyalty personified," he remarked. "Her greatness was rooted in showing up every day... She was at her very best when the moments were biggest."
Taurasi's legacy will continue to inspire future generations in Phoenix and beyond.
