The Arizona Cardinals concluded their season with a decisive 47-24 victory over the San Francisco 49ers at State Farm Stadium. Despite the win, the Cardinals did not achieve their season goals but see it as a foundation for future success.
"We didn't reach our goals," said quarterback Kyler Murray. "But I know we're heading in the right direction."
Murray had an impressive performance, throwing four touchdown passes without any turnovers or sacks. The defense also contributed by intercepting two passes from former teammate Joshua Dobbs.
The Cardinals finished the season with an 8-9 record under head coach Jonathan Gannon, securing third place in the NFC West ahead of the 49ers who ended at 6-11. Although their postseason hopes were dashed weeks ago, Gannon expressed pride in his team’s effort.
"We didn't accomplish what we wanted to accomplish this year, and that stings," Gannon stated. "But I'm proud of them... It was good to see us close out this year at home with a win."
Rookie Christian Jones started at right tackle for Murray, marking the fourth different starter in that position this season. Pro Bowl defensive end Nick Bosa played only in the first half and was unable to make significant impact against Jones.
Murray completed 25-of-35 passes for 242 yards, achieving a passer rating of 128.5—his best since mid-season. Reflecting on his personal performance, Murray described it as "solid" but acknowledged it wasn't up to his expectations.
Greg Dortch caught two touchdown passes from Murray while Trey McBride set an NFL record for most catches by a tight end in his first three seasons with 221 receptions. Marvin Harrison Jr. tied franchise records for rookie touchdown catches.
"I mean the records are whatever," McBride commented on his achievement. "I think it's just more important for us to get a win."
Sean Murphy-Bunting and Kei'Trel Clark each recorded interceptions during the game, though Murphy-Bunting was ejected after an altercation with Jajuan Jennings of the 49ers.
"You heard them talking and you knew what it was going to be," safety Budda Baker remarked about the incident.
Baker recently signed a contract extension and expressed optimism about Gannon's leadership moving forward: "I'm very excited for next year to come."
Gannon refrained from discussing future plans immediately but noted that preparations would begin promptly following exit interviews as players clear out their lockers.
"Just because we were close this year doesn't mean you'll be close next year," cautioned Murray regarding future aspirations.
In terms of draft positioning, Sunday's results secured Arizona with the 16th pick in the upcoming NFL Draft due to their .537 opponents' winning percentage being higher than other teams finishing with identical records.
