Trey McBride, a prominent tight end for the Arizona Cardinals, has been nominated as the team's representative for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. This prestigious recognition is given to NFL players who demonstrate excellence on the field and exceptional commitment to community service.
McBride shared his excitement with his mother after learning about his nomination. Initially unfamiliar with the award, she later called him back, overwhelmed with emotion after researching its significance. "This award means so much to me and to my family," McBride stated. "To be a nominee of this is very special."
The Walter Payton Man of The Year award comes with a $55,000 donation from the NFL Foundation and Nationwide to a charity chosen by McBride. The overall winner will be announced during Super Bowl week at NFL Honors.
Nationwide has also initiated a Charity Challenge running from December 5th to January 6th. Fans can participate by voting on social media using #WPMOYChallenge along with Trey McBride's name or handle, or directly through NFL.com/ManOfTheYear. The player with the most mentions will receive an additional $35,000 for their charity.
McBride's dedication extends beyond football as he actively participates in community service activities. He expressed gratitude for being recognized for these efforts: "You're on such a platform as an NFL player to give back... I plan on continuing to do that."
His off-field contributions include participating in the NFL's USO program in Poland and supporting girls' flag football initiatives. Additionally, he frequently visits schools and engages in charitable events like hosting holiday shopping sprees for underprivileged children.
Raised in Colorado, McBride was instilled with values of giving back from an early age through family involvement in community service events and Special Olympics participation alongside his brothers.
Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill announced McBride's nomination, highlighting his impact both on and off the field over three years with the team: "Singling out one is always challenging but the work Trey has done...has been exceptional."
On-field performance aligns with McBride’s philanthropic endeavors; he has recorded 73 receptions over 11 games this season while contributing significantly to his team's offense.
