Trey McBride, the Arizona Cardinals tight end, has been targeted 92 times this season, ranking him 13th in the NFL. Despite missing a game due to a concussion, he remains without a touchdown from those targets. McBride has scored twice this year through other means but is still awaiting his first touchdown pass from quarterback Kyler Murray.
"I give (Kyler) a hard time, but honestly that's not really the main focus," McBride stated. "I've caught a ton of balls this year and I am grateful for the offense that I'm in."
McBride's performance on the field has been notable. He recently made 12 catches in each of his last two games and currently holds 73 receptions for 781 yards. He is on track to surpass his personal bests set last season and aims to become only the second Cardinals tight end after Jackie Smith to reach 1,000 yards.
No previous Cardinals tight end had achieved double-digit receptions in a game until McBride did it two weeks consecutively. He is also the first NFL tight end to achieve back-to-back games with 12 catches each.
"They've had some good tight ends run through this franchise," McBride commented on being compared with past players. "For me I try to play the best football I can play."
Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing emphasized McBride's importance: "When you have players of that caliber... they are always going to be forefront of your mind when you design the offense."
Earlier comments by coach Jonathan Gannon highlighted McBride as essentially being the team's No. 1 receiver. However, McBride downplayed this notion, attributing some of his success to rookie Marvin Harrison Jr.'s ability to draw attention away from him.
Looking ahead, both Murray and McBride remain optimistic about future touchdowns. "Whatever it is, we're going to get one soon," said McBride confidently.
