Roy Lopez, a defensive lineman for the Arizona Cardinals, participated in a unique shopping experience at a Walmart in Chandler. This visit was part of the "Shop With A Jock" event, organized in collaboration with Desert Financial Credit Union. Lopez joined nine other players to help 30 underprivileged children from Chicanos Por La Causa select items using $500 gift cards.

"It's cool getting to share stories with people you can relate to," Lopez said. The event allowed children to choose various items, from gaming consoles and bikes to snacks like Slim Jims.

Parents kept the event a surprise for their children, adding excitement to the day. Jeff Meshey, president and CEO of Desert Financial Credit Union, expressed his enthusiasm for the annual tradition: "We really believe in giving back to the community... It's just great to see the kids. They get so excited and it's like Christmas coming early."

The day also evoked personal memories for participants. Cornerback Kei'Trel Clark recalled receiving a PlayStation 4 as his favorite gift, while another attendee shared a memory involving Nike Kobe Bryant sneakers.

Samuel, one of the children at the event, enjoyed meeting Cardinals players for the first time and chose practical items like a toothbrush during his time with outside linebacker Dennis Gardeck. Gardeck attended despite recovering from an ACL injury and found joy in contributing to the community spirit.

"I think it's important to give back in general," Gardeck noted. "The spirit of gratitude is so healing and so inspiring."
