Mention Garrett Williams outside of the Arizona Cardinals' fanbase, and many might confuse him with Garrett Wilson, the New York Jets wide receiver. However, Coach Jonathan Gannon believes that Williams' contributions as a second-year cornerback "might fly under the radar a little bit," which he considers an understatement.
Williams has shown remarkable performance this season, primarily playing in the slot. According to Pro Football Reference, he has been targeted 41 times, allowing only 21 receptions for a total of 173 yards. His passer rating against stands at 58.3. In Seattle, Williams made a notable play by intercepting Geno Smith in the end zone, preventing at least three points from being scored.
Gannon highlighted that Williams is often seen as the next man up in various scenarios yet to unfold. "I don't like to name names and stuff like that, but this guy is playing really good football right now. Like really good football," Gannon said. "I don't think he's hit his ceiling yet."
The Cardinals' defense has been performing well recently, conceding nine points to the Bears, six to the Jets, and ten to the Seahawks—excluding an interception return touchdown. Veteran Budda Baker leads their secondary while young cornerbacks Starling Thomas V, Max Melton, and particularly Williams have demonstrated significant progress.
Williams expressed his ambition: "You want to be known as a playmaker, someone who is a game changer. I'm trying to be that guy here." He acknowledged improvement over last year but aims for further growth.
Garrett Williams is becoming a name worth remembering.
