Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) recently concluded its 7th annual Innovation Challenge, a biannual event aimed at promoting creativity and problem-solving among students. The competition serves as a platform for students to present innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
Eight finalists emerged from an initial pool of 18 applicants, each presenting projects that showcased their entrepreneurial spirit. Dr. Kishore Dash, who oversees PVCC’s Entrepreneurship Education Center (EEC), praised the participants: “I am so proud of the talent and hard work displayed by our students in this year's Innovation Challenge competition. Each finalist brought forward innovative solutions to important problems, demonstrating not only creativity but a deep commitment to making a difference.”
Micaela Lawless, a business student, won first place with her project UMOMI—a postpartum support app. She shared her experience: “Participating in the PVCC innovation challenge competition has been a pivotal experience for me.” Lawless emphasized the value of mentorship she received from Dr. Dash and others, stating it helped refine her concept and presentation skills.
Lawless will represent PVCC at the Big Pitch Competition on November 19 with her telemedicine app designed to support postpartum mothers through access to medical professionals and therapists.
Second place went to Janobia McClure for Tried & Trusted Advisors, a Medicare-focused health insurance agency aimed at assisting those nearing or entering retirement. Abigail Charles secured third place with Charles Realty & Co., focusing on residential real estate consulting.
The success of the event was supported by judges, mentors, committee members, and sponsors including Wells Fargo and the Maricopa Foundation.
PVCC's EEC continues to support entrepreneurship through resources such as mentorships and networking opportunities. The center offers programs like an Entrepreneurial Studies Certificate program that includes courses in entrepreneurship, business technology, industry seminars, research projects, and more.
