Wesley Winter's academic journey at Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) highlights the impact of mentorship and dedication. Under the guidance of Physics Faculty Dr. Casey Durandet, Winter pursued his passion for physics, crediting her support as pivotal during challenging times.

“I would not be here today without Dr. Durandet,” Winter expressed, acknowledging her influence through constructive criticism and encouragement. “Her passionate way of interacting with students, and her time and devotion—it's evident she lives and breathes teaching.”

Winter's path took a significant turn when he joined the U.S. Department of Energy’s Community College Internships program at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). Over two summers, he gained practical experience with advanced particle accelerators, reinforcing his aspiration to work in accelerator physics. He plans to continue pursuing opportunities at Fermilab or similar facilities and aims to engage in graduate studies there.

After graduating from PVCC in December 2023, Winter transitioned to Arizona State University (ASU) on an All-USA scholarship to pursue a bachelor's degree in physics. At ASU’s Barrett Honors College, he is working on an undergraduate thesis while adapting to a new environment among peers who share his enthusiasm for physics. Despite moving forward, Winter remains connected to PVCC by working in its Advisement department, guiding students in their educational journeys—a role familiar from his volunteer work as a peer mentor.

“Wes is the type of student who makes his professors proud and who makes the teaching profession a joyful and rewarding one,” said Dr. Durandet. She praised his perseverance and positive attitude while noting his efforts to support other students.

During his time at PVCC, Winter received several accolades, including the Puma Pin awarded by former president Dr. Paul Dale for embodying PVCC’s spirit through outstanding contributions.

As Winter continues his education and career in physics, he values the mentorship from Dr. Durandet, who remains a key supporter.
