Punter Blake Gillikin has been named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, following a standout performance against the Bears. In the game, Gillikin averaged 46.8 yards per punt, with three of his four punts landing inside the 20-yard line. His most significant contribution came in the fourth quarter when Joey Blount downed his punt inside the 1-yard line, leading to a safety for the Cardinals shortly after.

Coach Jonathan Gannon praised Gillikin's efforts, stating, "I thought guys starred in their role. Blake, I thought, was really good." Since joining the team last year, Gillikin has significantly impacted the Cardinals' special teams. He ended 2023 with a franchise record of a 50.6-yard average on 51 punts and is currently averaging 49.4 yards on 29 punts this season.

Gillikin mentioned overcoming early-season challenges, particularly in Week 3 against Detroit: "Specifically in the Detroit game, I felt like I didn't hit the ball good at all," he said. "I focused on flushing that." He attributes recent success to better coordination with his gunners and consistency throughout the season.

His contributions extend beyond punting; he also holds for kicker Chad Ryland's field goals and extra points. Ryland is currently 10-11 on field goals this season. Gillikin explained his role as a holder: "I view myself as a caddie as a holder because you're talking about lines and where are you putting the ball down."

In other news, safety Russ Yeast has been added to the Cardinals' practice squad. Yeast was previously with the Rams and Panthers after being drafted by Los Angeles in 2022.
