November marks a time to honor veterans' sacrifices and dedication, and Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) has organized events at its Union Hills Campus' Cordova Plaza to show support for those who have served in the armed forces.
"November is about gratitude, and honoring veterans reminds us to be thankful for the sacrifices that protect our freedoms," said Aaron Marsh, PVCC VA Work Study and Navy Veteran.
Dr. Jana Schwartz, PVCC president, expressed her appreciation by saying, "I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt thanks to our veterans for their service to our country. Their dedication and sacrifices have paved the way for the freedoms we cherish and the opportunities we enjoy. At Paradise Valley Community College, we are so proud to have veterans as part of our community; their resilience, leadership, and commitment to excellence inspire us all."
In preparation for Veterans Day on November 11, PVCC has been collecting messages of gratitude from students, staff, and community members. These messages are displayed on PVCC's website and in the Veterans Lounge located in the K building.
A significant tribute includes an American flag display set up by the Veterans Office in Cordova Plaza from November 4 through November 15. This serves as a reminder of veterans' sacrifices.
On Tuesday, November 5th, from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., a pop-up tent with donuts, coffee, and veteran appreciation cards will be available in Cordova Plaza. This allows students, faculty, and staff to express gratitude towards veterans using benefits at PVCC.
Additionally, a free Veterans Appreciation BBQ will occur on Wednesday, November 6th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., open to the first 200 attendees. The event includes food options like hamburgers and hot dogs alongside field games and military trivia. It coincides with PVCC's Human Resources Benefit Fair.
PVCC's Veterans Services Office (VSO) plays a crucial role in supporting veterans during their academic pursuits by liaising with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Rob Stimson from VSO highlighted their mission: “Every one of our veteran students is personally important to me because we’ve all walked the walk; we’re going through the same things...education is a very important part of that.”
Christina Calderon emphasized her commitment as well: “I am truly honored and privileged to serve our veterans and military-connected students here at PVCC.” She noted that VSO maintains a family atmosphere where they deeply appreciate veterans' sacrifices.
