Phoenix Art Museum has announced the speakers for its upcoming Lenhardt Lecture series. The Fall 2024 lecture will feature Tucson-born visual artist Eamon Ore-Giron on November 13 at 6:30 pm. Ore-Giron, known for his abstract geometric paintings, will discuss plans for a new commissioned painting set to debut at the museum in early 2025.
The Spring 2025 lecture, scheduled for February 5 at 6 pm, will present a conversation between artist Charles Gaines and Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem. This event will include a performance of Gaines' work "Manifestos 3" (2018).
Jeremy Mikolajczak, Sybil Harrington Director and CEO of Phoenix Art Museum, expressed enthusiasm about the lineup: “We are pleased to welcome Eamon Ore-Giron and Charles Gaines to Phoenix Art Museum this season as part of our ongoing Lenhardt Lecture series.” He emphasized the significance of having two artists whose works are central to this year's exhibitions engage with the community.
Eamon Ore-Giron's practice incorporates cross-cultural influences and spans various mediums including video and music. His new commission for Phoenix Art Museum is slated to premiere in March 2025.
Charles Gaines is recognized for his conceptual art that translates images into numerical structures and musical notations. His work is featured in major collections worldwide. In October, PhxArt will host two exhibitions focusing on his work.
Thelma Golden has been influential in curating exhibitions that highlight African American artists. She has served as Director and Chief Curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem since 2005.
David Lenhardt, vice chair of the museum’s Board of Trustees, shared his excitement about the lectures: “Dawn and I are so pleased to welcome Eamon Ore-Giron, Charles Gaines, and Thelma Golden as this season’s Lenhardt Lecture speakers.”
Beyond their presentations at Phoenix Art Museum, both Ore-Giron and Gaines will engage with local artists through mentorship opportunities as part of the Lenhardt Lectures' educational outreach.
