The Phoenix Mercury is set to honor significant figures in its history by unveiling permanent banners as part of a reimagined Ring of Honor. This event will take place during the team's home opener on May 18. "The Mercury is one of the original WNBA franchises and it’s important that we celebrate our 28-year history and those who have helped the organization become one of the league’s premier franchises," said Mat Ishbia, owner of the Phoenix Mercury and Phoenix Suns. "We look forward to recognizing the outstanding contributions of our Ring of Honor members and cementing their legacy in Mercury history with these new permanent banners."
These commemorative banners will hang from the rafters above the east sideline, featuring uniform numbers and last names for player inductees, while non-players will have their years of tenure displayed.
Local artists Antoinette Cauley and Paige Reesor were commissioned to create murals celebrating Mercury greats, which debuted alongside similar works for the Phoenix Suns. These can be viewed at the arena's upper level throughout CarMax Concourse.
The current members who will receive permanent banners include Jennifer Gillom, Cheryl Miller, Bridget Pettis, Penny Taylor, and Michele Timms. They will attend the ceremony along with other alumni on May 18.
Jennifer Gillom (#22), inducted on June 6, 2006, was pivotal in leading Phoenix to playoff appearances early in its history. Cheryl Miller served as both head coach and general manager during her tenure starting in 1997. Bridget Pettis (#32) scored the first points for the team in its inaugural season. Penny Taylor (#13), a key player from Australia, contributed significantly to multiple championship wins. Michele Timms (#7), also from Australia, made her mark as an energetic point guard.
