As the preseason concludes, the Arizona Cardinals face significant decisions regarding their roster. Notably, in the outside linebacker group, rookie Xavier Thomas did not play in the final preseason game, while Victor Dimukeje had limited action. In contrast, Jesse Luketa and Cam Thomas played extensively.
"I'm exhausted," Luketa admitted.
Both players recorded sacks, with Thomas achieving his third sack in two games. These players from a previous draft class are hopeful to secure their spots on the team. The position remains dynamic with inside linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. capable of playing off the edge and Darius Robinson potentially shifting from defensive line to outside linebacker.
With Zaven Collins and Dennis Gardeck set to start, and BJ Ojulari out for the season, the team may consider keeping five or even six players at this position.
"I'm going to keep my phone on," Luketa said. "I feel like I have done everything I could do."
In another development, undrafted rookie Xavier Weaver may benefit from Zay Jones's suspension by securing a spot in the wide receiver room. Weaver's 43-yard catch and speed could contribute significantly to both offense and special teams.
The starting offensive line for the last preseason game featured Jackson Barton, Elijah Wilkinson, Trystan Colon, Jon Gaines II, and Christian Jones.
The team experienced several injuries reminiscent of a challenging preseason game against Minnesota in 2000. Injuries affected Christian Jones (knee), Elijah Wilkinson (ankle), Tony Jones (shoulder), QB Desmond Ridder (concussion protocol), and safety Darren Hall (hip). These injuries may influence final roster decisions due Tuesday.
Kicker Matt Prater demonstrated reliability with a successful 50-yard field goal despite missing a 55-yarder earlier in the game.
New tight end Sage Surratt suffered an ankle injury when tackle Christian Jones fell on him during a running play. While Surratt was unlikely to make the team, his injury complicates his prospects of finding another opportunity elsewhere.
The competition for backup quarterback saw Clayton Tune post better numbers but also endure three more sacks and throw a Pick-6 after Ridder's injury.
As preparations for the regular season commence, further developments are anticipated over the next few days.
