Monti Ossenfort expressed confidence in the Arizona Cardinals' progress as they enter Year 2 under his management. Reflecting on quarterback Kyler Murray's recent trip to California, where he worked with teammates on the passing game, Ossenfort described it as "awesome."
"I wish I would've been invited," said the Cardinals general manager on Sunday.
Ossenfort emphasized that the team is in a better position this year compared to last, highlighting improvements in the roster and Murray's health. "I think we're in a position where guys earn spots this year," he stated, implying that last year's thinner roster made it easier for some players to secure positions.
The Cardinals have enhanced their offensive lineup, providing Murray with better weapons and an improving offensive line. While no significant injuries have occurred so far in training camp, Ossenfort did not rule out further additions. "The concept of roster building is ongoing all the time," he noted.
Addressing concerns about the lack of major additions to edge rusher positions, despite drafting Xavier Thomas in the fifth round and not signing any free agents, Ossenfort explained that market conditions and draft dynamics influenced these decisions. "I wouldn't say it's a situation where we ignore a position; it's more the opportunity," he clarified.
Regarding potential contract extensions for players in their final contract years, including running back James Conner and safety Budda Baker among others, Ossenfort indicated that such decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis during the season.
Ossenfort expressed satisfaction with how the offseason unfolded, particularly noting Murray's efforts to foster team bonding. He refrained from making broad predictions but conveyed optimism about the team's current trajectory. "We have a long way to go," he said. "We're ready to take the next step."
