As the Arizona Cardinals conclude their offseason work, players are taking time away from the facility while remaining focused on preparing for training camp in Glendale on July 23. During this interim period, azcardinals.com is evaluating each position group ahead of camp, with inside linebacker next on the list.
The team has solidified certain positions within this group. Kyzir White and Mack Wilson Sr. are considered locks. The defense suffered significantly when White sustained a biceps injury in Week 11 last season. Before his injury, White was integral to Nick Rallis' defensive scheme, playing every snap and serving as a vocal leader despite it being his first season with the team. His impactful play was evident from the season opener against the Commanders.
Mack Wilson Sr., who joined during free agency, expressed confidence in his decision to join the Cardinals, stating that "something is brewing" in Arizona. Wilson's hard-hitting style complements White's approach, making them a formidable pair whether they play together or rotate.
Several other players have work to do to secure their spots: Krys Barnes, Owen Pappoe, Markus Bailey, Trevor Nowaske, and Tyreek Maddox-Williams. Barnes and Pappoe gained valuable experience last season after injuries sidelined White and Josh Woods. This experience may give them an advantage over Bailey, Nowaske, and Maddox-Williams as they compete for backup roles and special teams duties.
The likelihood of upgrading the inside linebacker position appears low. The unit showed marked improvement during the offseason. Both White and Wilson are motivated by being overlooked in rankings of top linebacker duos.
