As the Cardinals' offseason concludes, players have left the facility. Many emphasize that this period is not a break from football but rather time away from the facility to stay focused and prepared for training camp in Glendale on July 23. During this interim, azcardinals.com will evaluate each position group before camp, starting with quarterbacks.

Locks: Kyler Murray, Desmond Ridder

Kyler Murray remains the Cardinals' franchise quarterback, affirmed by statements from the offensive coordinator, head coach, and general manager. The front office has made it clear that Murray is central to the team's plans. In eight games last season, Murray passed for nearly 1,800 yards and 10 touchdowns and was instrumental in tight end Trey McBride's emergence. With a full and healthy offseason behind him, expectations are high for Murray's performance in 2024.

The backup quarterback position is crucial in the NFL. The Cardinals felt this acutely when they had to start Joshua Dobbs and Clayton Tune during Murray's absence. General Manager Monti Ossenfort traded Rondale Moore to the Falcons for Desmond Ridder, who now competes for the backup spot. Ridder brings starting experience from his 19 games with Atlanta last season, where he passed for 2,836 yards and rushed for nearly 200 yards. His similar playing style to Murray adds value to the quarterback room.

Work To Do: Clayton Tune

Clayton Tune’s sole start against the Browns in 2023 did not meet expectations. While Ridder’s experience gives him an edge as QB2 going into training camp, both he and Tune will compete for this role. Coach Jonathan Gannon noted growth in Tune's second year but also expressed a preference for having three quarterbacks on the roster. This means all three could potentially remain with Tempe; however, it remains uncertain if they will all be on the 53-man roster or if one might move to the practice squad.

Upgrade Odds: Low

With their primary quarterback established and two competent backups already present, there is no pressing need for another addition at this position.
