Grand Canyon graduates to compete in U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials

Grand Canyon graduate hurdler James Smith II and graduate thrower Israel Oloyede will compete at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, which begin Friday in Eugene, Oregon, and run through June 30.

The U.S. Olympic Trials will be televised on NBC. A full schedule of events can be found here, while a full broadcast schedule is available here.

Smith II, who qualified for the U.S. trials with a 400-meter hurdles time of 49.21 seconds at NCAA Championships this month, is scheduled to enter the 400-meter hurdles preliminary round next Thursday at 6:20 p.m. (Phoenix time), with semifinals on June 28 at 6:21 p.m. and event finals on June 29 at 5:20 p.m.

Oloyede has been considered a U.S. trials qualifier in the hammer throw since April when he threw 74.84 meters at the 64th annual Mt. SAC Relays. Oloyede bested his mark at NCAA Championships this month when he threw for a GCU school record of 75.29 meters for a program-best finish of fourth place. Oloyede is scheduled to enter the qualifying round at 4:30 p.m. on June 28, with finals on June 30 at 3:15 p.m.

The Lopes can earn a spot on Team USA for the 2024 Paris Olympics with a top-three finish.
