Phoenix officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony recently to celebrate the opening of the final stage of the PHX Sky Train, a 2.5-mile extension that connects the terminals with the Rental Car Center and two new stations.
“The new PHX Sky Train extension is a perfect example of why I believe Phoenix is the city of the future,” Mayor Kate Gallego said in a release from the city. The extension adds the new Rental Car Center Station and the 24th Street Station after opening on Dec. 20.
Gallego and members of the Phoenix City Council, as well as other local officials, attended the Dec. 19 ceremony. The new addition means it will take less than eight minutes to go from Terminal 4 to the Rental Car Center, and about 13 minutes to travel the five miles from the 44th Street Station to the Rental Car Center Station. Trains will arrive and depart every 3-5 minutes, 24 hours a day, the city said.
“Phoenix is a hub for innovation, and we are constantly using data-driven technology to make life easier for our residents, as well as our visitors," Gallego said in the release. "When fans arrive for the big game in February, they will instantly see why Phoenix is a top-tier destination for business, for jobs, for vacationers, and for those who’d like to build a life here.”
The 24th Street Station is located at 24th Street and Buckeye Road. the station features Terrazzo flooring, which was created by artists and can be seen at both stations.
Stage 2 of the project earned the Envision Gold Award by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, the release said. Charges from the rental car and airline passenger facilities were used to fund the $745 million development.
