President Joe Biden appointed Phoenix Suns star Chris Paul to serve on the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
The announcement was made on the White House’s official website, which said, “the President’s Board will advance the goal of the HBCU Initiative, established by the Carter administration, to increase the capacity of HBCUs to provide the highest-quality education to its students and continue serving as engines of opportunity.”
The president’s initiative has distributed more than $5 billion to HBCUs through COVID-19 emergency relief funds and HBCU Capital Financing loans, according to The Hilltop.
The White House said of Paul, “his advocacy for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) is extremely important, and through his Chris Paul Family Foundation, he has actively expanded a Business of Entertainment Media and Sports special topics course at NC A&T, Southern University, Winston Salem State, and Clark Atlanta University.”
Paul, a 12-time NBA All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist, was listed as one of the 75 greatest players in NBA history. He attended Wake Forest University in North Carolina.
The basketball player has won numerous humanitarian awards throughout his career for his charitable work through his foundation. He is known as an entrepreneur, activist, and philanthropist, according to the White House.
His production company, called Ohh Dip!!!, turns ideas into inspiring programming across sports and entertainment platforms, according to its Instagram profile. This includes the Why Not Us shows with the North Carolina Central University men’s basketball team.
“Incredibly humbled to be appointed to President Biden's HBCU Board of Advisors,” Paul said on Twitter. “Looking forward to working with this amazing group to continue to elevate these historical institutions.”
Paul and 17 others were appointed to the board, which aims to “provide the highest-quality education to its students and continue serving as engines of opportunity,” the White House said.
