City of Phoenix issued the following announcement on Dec. 28.
Never let your Christmas tree get dry or it will quickly become a fire hazard in your home
On Tuesday morning, Phoenix firefighters demonstrated the dangers a dry Christmas tree can pose.
Members from the Phoenix Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division built two makeshift scenarios at the Training Academy.
Firefighters dressed in turnouts demonstrated how quickly dry Christmas trees can catch fire.
In just a matter of seconds after ignition, the dry trees consumed both a living room and shed with flames.
The goal was to encourage folks to toss their tree before it becomes dangerous.
Sadly, a similar scenario happened on Christmas day in Phoenix after a fire broke out in a home near 24th Street and Osborn.
After firefighters quickly arrived on the scene, the fire had already made its way into the attic.
No injuries were reported but because of the fire and smoke damage, five people are now without a home.
The Phoenix Fire Department wants to remind citizens to remove dry Christmas trees from homes as soon as possible as a safety precaution.
When disposing a dry tree, ensure its not within 10 feet or any structure nearby.
The Public Works Department offers Phoenix residents several drop-off locations for their live Christmas trees and wreaths to be composted.
Trees or wreaths may be dropped off at any of the participating Phoenix parks.
Only live trees and wreaths are accepted, not plastic trees and wreaths.
Trees and wreaths will be composted at the City of Phoenix Compost Facility.
