The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has issued a High Pollution Advisory (HPA) for December 24 and 25 in Maricopa County, Arizona, due to expected high levels of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), commonly known as soot. The advisory anticipates pollution levels exceeding federal health standards.
In response, the Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) has declared a "No Burn Day," implementing restrictions that include prohibiting wood burning in residential fireplaces, chimineas, outdoor fire pits, and similar fires across the county. The use of leaf blowers on governmental properties and off-road vehicles is also prohibited during this period.
Health officials warn that PM2.5 can penetrate deeply into the respiratory tract, potentially causing irritation to the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. It may also exacerbate conditions such as asthma and heart disease. Those most at risk include individuals with heart or lung diseases, older adults, and children.
Employers and Transportation Coordinators participating in Travel Reduction Programs are urged to activate their HPA Plans without delay. ADEQ advises the general public to minimize outdoor activities while the advisory is active, particularly for those with respiratory issues.
Residents are encouraged to contribute to air quality improvement by driving less, carpooling, using public transit or telecommuting. Additional information about reducing air pollution can be found at Maricopa.gov/AQ.
The MCAQD's mission focuses on enhancing air quality in Maricopa County under guidelines from the federal Clean Air Act. For more resources on air quality management or updates from MCAQD via social media platforms like Instagram (@maricopaair), Twitter (@maricopaair), and Facebook (@maricopaair).
