Sen. Martha McSally has proposed legislation that would provide incentives for taxpayers to travel domestically.
The American Trip Act provides a $4,000 tax credit for individuals ($8,000 for joint filers and $500 for dependent children) to travel anywhere within the United States and its territories as long as the final destination is more than 50 miles from the traveler's primary residence. Qualified travel expenses include food, lodging, transportation and entertainment, according to the Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association.
The suggestion comes at the urging of the American Hotel and Lodging Association whose Roadmap to Recovery includes strategies to incentivize Americans to travel once it is safe again.
The American Hotel and Lodging Association is also asking Congress to assist in these areas: Extending the Paycheck Protection Program and Employee Retention Credit to hotels so they can keep and rehire employees, providing tax credits for personal protective equipment and extending the flexibility of Paycheck Protection Program loans so that hotels struggling with commercial mortgages can keep their doors open.
