The Arizona Cardinals may have found the ideal backup quarterback in Jacoby Brissett. Speaking at the NFL owners meetings, Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon commented on Brissett's qualities: "From a team-first mentality standpoint, Jacoby fits that. He's very smart and to compete for that role it's kind of the perfect thing. And he can play winning football. He can win you some games."
Brissett's potential as a backup quarterback is emphasized by the experience of Colt McCoy, who filled in for Kyler Murray in 2021, leading the Cardinals to a strong 10-2 start and winning two of his three starts. The assumption remains that Murray might miss games, although this scenario is not guaranteed.
The narrative about Murray being injury-prone is challenged by his record. Aside from a significant ACL injury resulting in 15 missed games, Murray has only missed three other games in his career and completed full schedules in three of four non-ACL-impacted seasons.
Clayton Tune is also in the running for the backup position, though Brissett brings experience that Tune lacks. With the potential addition of a fourth quarterback for the offseason, the Cardinals may choose to maintain a smaller roster, despite considerable offseason opportunities for Tune.
General Manager Monti Ossenfort emphasized the importance of depth at this position: "It's the most important position in the game. Whether it is depth or high-level people in the room … we feel like we have insurance, people that can play if need be. I think that's going to be good competition." Ossenfort expressed satisfaction with the current quarterbacks, stating, "We are happy with what Clayton has done. We are excited to work with all three of them."
