Joseph Lopez has been indicted for allegedly throwing an explosive device at Glendale Police officers during a protest last month, as announced by Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. The incident reportedly occurred at 67th Avenue and Camelback Road, where a large crowd had gathered. Police declared the assembly unlawful due to aggressive behavior from the protesters.

During efforts to disperse the crowd, Lopez is accused of lighting a firework and hurling it into a group of officers. The explosion resulted in injuries to 22 officers, ranging from burns to hearing damage. Consequently, Lopez faces 22 counts of aggravated assault, each count representing an injured officer.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell stated, “When an officer is assaulted, it’s not just an attack on them, it’s an attack on the safety of our communities. I will not tolerate anyone treating law enforcement as targets or endangering their lives.”

Lopez has been ordered held on a $100,000 secured bond by a judge. To secure release before trial, he must pay 10% of this amount to the court.

It is important to note that a criminal charge is merely an accusation and Lopez is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
