In the lead-up to free agency, several teams are releasing high-profile wide receivers due to salary cap considerations. This trend is not uncommon at this time of year, as teams evaluate players based on their cost-effectiveness rather than merely clearing cap space.
Recently, three notable veteran wide receivers have been released or are expected to be released: Davante Adams from the Jets, Tyler Lockett from the Seahawks, and Christian Kirk from the Jaguars. The Arizona Cardinals may be interested in acquiring a veteran receiver to complement Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson.
Christian Kirk could be a particularly interesting option for the Cardinals due to his past connection with quarterback Kyler Murray. Kirk was known for receiving deep passes from Murray during his previous tenure with Arizona. However, there are questions about whether he retains his physical capabilities after sustaining injuries over the past two seasons following an impressive debut season with Jacksonville.
"Kirk would intrigue me, because he and Kyler Murray were close," stated Pete Vander Stoep of the Arizona Cardinals organization. He added that "Kirk was a guy who was on the receiving end of a ton of deep passes from Kyler that the Cardinals hope to reintegrate into the offense."
The Cardinals will need to bolster their wide receiver lineup given their own free agents. While they may consider options in the draft, there are numerous veteran receivers available on the market. DK Metcalf has also requested a trade, while Tyler Lockett has been linked to the Raiders under former coach Pete Carroll.
"The Cardinals are going to have to add to the WR room given the free agents of their own," noted Vander Stoep.
As teams make adjustments ahead of free agency, organizations like the Cardinals will have multiple choices if they choose to pursue experienced wide receivers.
