Winston DeLattiboudere III, the new defensive line coach for the Cardinals, addressed the media in his first press conference. He quickly shared that he is often referred to as "Coach DeBo," a nickname that originated during his time as a graduate assistant at UNC Charlotte due to the complexity of his last name.
Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis, who was familiar with DeLattiboudere from their college days at Minnesota, brought him into the facility. Rallis recalled their time together when he led the Golden Gophers defense and DeLattiboudere was an eager freshman.
DeLattiboudere's coaching style involves leading by example. He participates in drills alongside players rather than just instructing them. "In order to be able to jump to where you want to be able to go, you got to set a standard and I set a standard by telling my guys, 'match me,'" he explained.
At 27, DeLattiboudere is close in age to many of his players, such as Roy Lopez and Khyiris Tonga. His experience includes time with the Jaguars and Packers under the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship, which taught him effective coaching techniques. His recent stint in college coaching gives him insight into working with younger players like Darius Robinson and Dante Stills.
"I can directly relate to those guys because I was coaching guys, if not a year than two years younger than them," said DeLattiboudere. He aims to build relationships with players while maintaining authority.
DeLattiboudere has also developed camaraderie with fellow coaches through early morning workouts. "Coach JG (Jonathan Gannon), he pushes me to make sure I bring my juice every day," he noted.
Reflecting on his journey back to Arizona, DeLattiboudere acknowledged his eagerness to learn from colleagues like Rallis while embracing his energetic approach: "I'm a little bit of an energizer bunny and (Rallis) has juice, but he's stoic."
