The Arizona House Committee on Science & Technology has given unanimous approval to HB2484, a bill proposed by State Representative Beverly Pingerelli. The legislation aims to regulate student internet access and limit the use of wireless communication devices during school hours.

Representative Pingerelli said, "The excessive use of cell phones in schools is a growing crisis that is harming our children’s education and well-being. It’s time to restore order in the classroom." She emphasized that the bill's purpose is to ensure schools create policies that keep students focused on learning rather than being distracted by social media and texting. "The goal is simple: devices should be ‘away for the day’ so kids can engage in their education, free from constant digital distractions," she added.

HB2484 mandates that school districts and charter schools develop policies restricting student access to social media on school-provided internet services and limit personal device usage during instructional periods. Teachers will have the authority to allow social media access only when it serves educational purposes. The bill also permits students to use their devices in emergencies or when instructed by a teacher for academic tasks.

"Education should be about equipping our children with knowledge and skills, not competing with TikTok and Snapchat for their attention," Representative Pingerelli remarked. "This bill restores a learning environment where teachers can teach, and students can succeed."

The proposal aligns with the House Republican Majority Plan, which focuses on empowering parents, minimizing classroom distractions, and enhancing student success. The bill will now proceed to the full House for further consideration.

Beverly Pingerelli represents Legislative District 28 in Peoria, Sun City, Sun City West, and Phoenix as a Republican member of the Arizona House of Representatives.
