Grand Canyon University's indoor track and field team is set to participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center, marking their first appearance at this venue for the season. The event will take place over two days, starting on Friday at 3 p.m. and concluding on Saturday at the same time. GCU's team will include 57 competitors.

Lopes head coach Tom Flood expressed enthusiasm about the competition, stating, "We're excited to have a full crew competing this weekend in Albuquerque." He highlighted the significance of the UNM meets, describing them as "some of the best meets in the nation," with opportunities to compete against nationally ranked teams like Texas and Cal.

The invitational represents GCU's first multi-day meet of the season. Field events are scheduled from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and will resume from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Track events will occur between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday and continue from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Flood added, "We are excited to see some amazing performances in all event areas throughout the meet."

For many GCU athletes, this meet follows a two-week break since their last competition in Flagstaff, where they participated in back-to-back events with varying roster sizes.

Senior hurdler Cam Wilmington stood out during these previous meets with a remarkable performance of 7.90 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, earning him recognition as WAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week.

Additionally, sophomore Francisco Marques made an impressive debut by topping WAC's performance list in the same event with a time of 7.92 seconds last week. Other notable performances came from sophomore pole vaulter Nicole Prall and senior weight thrower Jamel Shaw who achieved top conference marks.
