Jonathan Gannon, head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, has expressed high expectations for running back Trey Benson as he enters his second season. When asked about Benson's potential development, Gannon was straightforward in his response: "Light it up."
The Cardinals have re-signed James Conner to be their primary running back following a successful season where he achieved career-best rushing yards and maintained good health. Conner has also served as an ideal mentor to Benson, who began emulating the veteran's playing style as the season progressed.
Benson was showing promising performance until an ankle injury late in the season limited his play. He concluded with 291 yards on 63 carries, averaging 4.6 yards per attempt. These numbers are considered modest; however, if Conner remains healthy and Benson continues his progress from last year, they could form a strong backfield duo for the team.
Gannon stated confidently: "If (Trey) takes the necessary jump from Year 1 to Year 2, I think we have two starting backs. That's how I view those guys. You see certain teams out there with two '1s,' I would say, and I think we should have two '1s' next year."
