Grand Canyon University's track and field team is set to compete in the Lumberjack Team Challenge at Northern Arizona's Walkup Skydome on Friday. The event will feature field competitions starting at 2 p.m., followed by running events at 4 p.m.
This week, GCU is bringing a smaller squad compared to last week's meet, which saw over 90 athletes participating. "We will be sending a much smaller group, mostly throwers and jumpers, to this week's NAU meet," stated Lopes head coach Tom Flood. He added that most of the sprinters and hurdlers would focus on training for upcoming larger meets.
Among the participants is senior Cam Wilmington, who recently achieved a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles and was named WAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week. Sophomore transfer Francisco Marques is also set to make his debut for GCU in the same event. "We are excited to finally see the season debut of Francisco in the 60-meter hurdles," said Flood. "He has had a fantastic fall and has looked really good in training."
Following their participation in Flagstaff, GCU plans to compete next weekend at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational in Albuquerque.
