Trey McBride reached significant personal milestones in a recent game against the Los Angeles Rams, yet it was not enough to secure a victory for the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals were defeated 13-9 after a critical interception by Rams cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon in the final moments.
Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray attempted a pass to McBride on first-and-goal from the L.A. 5-yard line with less than a minute remaining. The ball was tipped and intercepted by Witherspoon, ending the Cardinals' hopes of winning. "It felt like we for sure we were going to win that game," said Murray, drawing parallels to a previous loss against Green Bay.
Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon expressed his disappointment but remained optimistic about the team's progress. "I know we are close, man," he said. "But we will get better from it."
The Rams improved their record to 10-6 and have a chance to clinch the NFC West if other results fall in their favor this weekend. Meanwhile, the Cardinals dropped to 7-9 despite McBride's touchdown being their only one of the game.
McBride's touchdown came on his 98th catch of the season, behind blocking from fellow tight ends Elijah Higgins and Tip Reiman. Despite achieving personal success with over 100 receptions and 1,000 yards this season, McBride emphasized team goals: "The win means more to me."
A blocked extra point by Chad Ryland kept the Cardinals at a four-point deficit. Although both teams exchanged field goals in the fourth quarter, this missed opportunity proved costly.
Murray had an active game with 321 passing yards and another 32 rushing yards but was intercepted twice, including once on a crucial fourth-down play near the end zone.
Despite injuries limiting running back James Conner’s contributions early in the game, Michael Carter stepped up with 70 yards on 13 carries.
Defensively, Arizona limited Los Angeles to just 257 total yards while accumulating 396 themselves but failed to convert these into sufficient points. Coach Gannon succinctly summarized: "You gotta score more points than them."
With five yards separating them from potential victory before Witherspoon’s interception and considering other pivotal moments such as Ryland’s blocked extra point attempt following McBride’s touchdown celebration—the team found themselves frustrated yet determined after another challenging match-up against formidable opponents like LA Rams led by stellar performances across both sides including notable efforts from Marvin Harrison Jr., Budda Baker among others within Arizona ranks trying valiantly till last seconds hoping change fate eventually turn tables favorably upcoming contests ahead.
