Grand Canyon University's track and field team began their 2025 indoor season with a strong showing at the Spokane Invitational held at The Podium. Head coach Tom Flood, now in his 15th year, described the meet as "the best first meet in our program's storied history by far."
The event featured notable performances from both newcomers and seasoned athletes. Senior Taryn Burkett broke her own school record in the triple jump with a mark of 12.96 meters, surpassing her previous record of 12.65m set in 2022. Amanda Thrue also impressed by leading the field in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.57 seconds.
Coach Flood highlighted contributions from newcomers Nina Thevenin and Maria Sartin on the women's side, while junior transfer Miguel Rosario III excelled for the men's team by winning the 200m race with one of the fastest times in NCAA competition this season (20.97). Justin Raines made an impact with his performances in both the 60m and 200m events.
Further success was noted among new team members like Joshua Gittens and Prosper Ekporere. Gittens won the 400 meters, achieving one of the top times nationally (47.41), while Ekporere made a commendable debut after not competing for two years.
Returning athlete Erin Brown delivered solid results, including a strong finish in both the 60m and runner-up position in the 200m race.
GCU faced competitors from various Division I schools including Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Portland State, Washington, and Washington State. Following this successful opening meet, Coach Flood mentioned that they will take a break for holidays before resuming competition on January 10th at Flagstaff for the Friday Night Axe 'Em Open.
